Odontonema strictum

Cardinal Spear
Also called "Cardinal Flower", "Cardinal's Guard", "Firespike", and "Firestick". This is a subtropical plant native to Central America but widely grown in warm regions for the showy spikes of red flowers. It is probably a shrub in the tropics but in the southern U.S. it is a perennial that freezes down in winter and comes back in spring. A good winter mulch should assure it's survival in most of the lower South. Plant in a sheltered sunny location with reasonably good soil and irrigation.
