Piper kadsura

Pepper

This evergreen vine is native to woods near seashores in southern Japan.  It is as vine or groundcover with glossy heart-shaped leaves and is related to the plant from which we get black pepper and is the hardiest true pepper species.  Little known in the U.S. it should be tried in a protected semi-shady spot with good soil in Zones 8 and 9.
