Royal Fern

Royal Fern is found in humus rich moist to wet woodland sites (and even open areas in the North) over much of eastern North America. It has rather coarse fronds with twice pinnate leaves composed of fairly large leaflets which are somewhat un-fernlike but very attractive. It is a big fern suitable for gardens with humus rich shady sites that are moist to wet. Alan Armitage in his book Herbaceous Perennial Plants says: "Where they are happy, they are some of the biggest, most robust plants around, not just in the fern family, but in all herbaceous plants".
