Rhapidophyllum hystrix

Needle Palm

Needle Palm is a fan-leaf palm of mounding habit eventually forming a short trunk. It is a very ornamental palm that has been hardy to Washington, D.C. and has withstood temperatures to -6 degrees F. which may qualify it as the most cold-hardy palm.  A heavy winter mulch is advisable for young plants in areas where palms are marginal.  Needle Palm is beset with long sharp black "needles" around the base. These serve to protect the short flower stalk and seed cluster on the female plants.  Needle Palm is an uncommon native of the southern U.S. occuring in widely spaced sites from lower South Carolina to Florida and Mississippi. Plant in well-drained but moist soil in sun, shade, or semi-shade.
