Smilax biflora var. biflora

Chicken Wire Plant
This Smilax is a curious deciduous groundcover with small leaves and twiggy stems. A Woodlanders introduction that we obtained years ago from Brookside Gardens in Maryland. They had obtained this unusual plant as Smilax fragrans. We offered it as such for years. Our friend and noted plantsman Olivier Colin in France now tells us it is actually Smilax biflora var. biflora. We named it "Chicken Wire Plant". A most interesting groundcover plant for shade or semi-shade. Apparently native to China.
