Quercus prinoides

Dwarf Chinquapin Oak

This uncommon deciduous oak is similar to Quercus muhlenbergii (Chinquapin Oak) but it grows as a large shrub or small tree.  It can be rhizomatous.  The Dwarf Chinquapin Oak is usually found on rather sterile sandy or rocky slopes or prairies in the midwest or eastern piedmont region.  It is a useful small stature oak for sunny locations with well-drained soils.
