Pieris ryukyuensis 'Temple Bells'

Lily of the Valley Shrub

This evergreen shrub has glossy slightly toothed leaves which emerge bronze and turn dark green.  Dense clusters of hanging bell-like small white flowers in spring.  This species of Pieris is native to the Ryuku Islands (Okinawa) south of Japan where the climate is characterized by mild winters and hot summers.  'Temple Bells' is a choice variety.  This species of Pieris is better suited to the southeastern U.S. than is the similar P. japonica commonly grown in northern gardens.  Plant in well-drained acid soil in semi-shade, mulch with pine straw, and provide supplemental water during dry periods.
