Leucothoe racemosa

Sweetbells
This Leucothoe is native to eastern U.S. where it occurs in acidic woodland soils that are damp but not flooded. It is a deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub with racemes of little bell-like white flowers in spring. The 1 x 2 inch oval leaves are finely toothed and give good red fall color. Dr. Michael Dirr in The Manual of Woody Landscape Plants says: "I have only seen a few plants but feel, as a nativer shrub, it has great landscape possibilities."
