Juniperus communis var. depressa
Ground Juniper
The low-growing goundcover form of Juniperus communis is widespread in the higher latitudes and higher elevations. Ours is from an apparently clonal disjunct population that was discovered at Aiken, South Carolina by the botanixt Henry Ravenel in the mid-Nineteenth Century. We rediscovered Ravenel's historic site in Aiken's Hitchcock Woods preserve some years ago. This is an isolated population at the southernmost known site for this species. Here it is growing in deep sandy acid soil in light shade of scattered pine, Vaccinium arboreum, and Kalmia latifolia.
