Ilex verticillata x serrata 'Sparkleberry'

Holly, 'Sparkleberry' Winterberry hybrid
Our native Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticellata), its Japanese equivalent (Ilex serrata) and the hybrids between the two are small to medium size multi-stem decidous shrubs. The female plants produce masses of very showy red berries on the bare stems and make a striking effect in late fall and winter. 'Sparkleberry' is a vigorous upright shrub to 12 feet tall and is one of the above hybrids. It was introduced by the U.S. National Arboretum and has persistent bright red fruit. It is pollinated by 'Apollo' or 'Raritan Chief'.
