Ilex myrtifolia

Myrtleleaf Holly

Myrtleaf Holly is a large evergreen shrub or small tree found in seasonally flooded wetland sites with acid soil in the Coastal Plain of the southeastern U.S. The very small narrow leaves are distinctive.   This is a female clone and female plants typically have abundant red berries but yellow berried forms are not uncommon.   Ilex myrtifolia is a fine and unusual holly that deserves a place in southern gardens with sandy acid soil and adequate moisture or irrigation.
