Acer leucoderme

Chalkbark Maple

Acer leucoderme is a small, often multi-stemmed deciduous tree. Related to the Sugar Maple is is sometimes classified as Acer saccharum ssp. leucoderme. It usually grows in the understory of hardwood forests on slopes and hillsides with circum-neutral soils. It makes an attractive ornamental and can be planted in more open situations. Leaves have a yellow-green pubescence beneath. The pale gray bark gives it it's common name. An attractive small maple with very good orange-red fall color. Native in southeastern U.S.
