Gardenia sp. 'Kleim's Hardy'

Gardenia Cultivar

This gardenia is a small evergreen shrub with lustrous black-green leaves and fragrant single 2 inch ivory blooms. This little Gardenia has become popular in recent years after claims that it was untouched at 3 degrees F in Raleigh, NC. Dr. Dirr in  Manual of Woody Landscape Plants questions it being that hardy.  In southern gardens it is as with other Gardenias a good shrub for semi-shady sites with fertile acid soil and should be a good container plant if given winter protection in cold areas.
