Witch Alder

Fothergilla gardenii is a choice ornamental deciduous low shrub native very locally in the southeastern U.S.  It is found primarly in coastal areas of the Carolinas where it occurs in moist acid soils of pinelands and bog edges.  It is nevertheless a good plant for average garden soil and is hardy well north of its native range.  It is valued for its showy bottlebrush like white flowers in spring and for its fine red-orange fall color.
