Erica x darleyensis
Hybrid Heather
Heaths and heathers come in many species and varieties. Most are not well-suited to the heat and humidity of the southern U.S. but this hybrid between two European species, Erica erigena and E. carnea, is quite satisfactory. It is a low mounding evergreen shrub to 24 inches. It has small dark green needle-like leaves and rose-pink flowers. Plant in semi-shade, with well-drained acid soil. Dirr (Manual of Woody Landscape Plants) says: If one wants to grow a heath in the southeastern United States, this species represents a credible starting point."
