Ceanothus americanus

New Jersey Tea

New Jersey Tea is a small hardy deciduous shrub that is widespread in eastern North America where it occurs in a variety of habitats.  It has small rather elm-like leaves and short showy panicles of small white flowers in spring or sumer.  It is an attractive garden plant for a sunny or semi-shady spot with well-drained soil.  It was supposedly used as a tea substitute during the American Revolution.
