Asimina obovata

Big Flowered Pawpaw

This Pawpaw is a deciduous upright shrub with glossy blunt tip leathery leaves 1 inch wide by 2-4" long.   The showy white flowers are several inches in diameter and followed in mid to late summer by aromatic fleshy fruits with large brown seeds.  The fruits may be edible but inferior to those of  Asimina triloba so this Pawpaw is more valued as an interesting ornamental. This Pawpaw is native to sandhill and sandy scrub habitats in the Florida peninsula and should be planted in very sandy, well-drained soil with minimal competition and with full sun or only partial shade.
