Abelia chinensis
Chinese Abelia
This Abelia is an upright to spreading deciduous shrub native to China and one of the parents of the much more commonly grown hybrid Abelia x grandiflora. It can make a good hedge plant with abundant white flowers in summer and with leaves larger than the common Abelia. It is also a great butterfly plant for the southern garden. Freezes back but flowers well in zone 5. This Abelia is not readily available in the U.S. nursery trade. It should be planted in sun or semi-shade in well-drained soil.
