This native deciduous blueberry shrub is found throughout the eastern Carolinas northward into Virginia and sparingly south to Florida and Mississippi where it grows in dry woodland borders, thin woods, and pine barrens.  A colony forming shrub, it has small cylindrical white flowers followed by small shiny black fruits which are juicy and edible but not delicious.   The fall color is reddish.  This small stature blueberry shrub is a good drought resistant border plant in sandy acid soil areas.
