Gooseberry, Spiny

Spiny Gooseberry is an endangered native shrub found only in two small areas.  One population is in South Carolina and the other in Florida.  It is an arching shrub with spiny branches.  Small long petaled flowers are creamy colored and hang from the branches.  These are followed by half inch diameter greenish fruits with prominent flexible spines.  It grows on shaded hillsides in hardwood forests where it leafs out in the fall and goes deciduous in summer.  It is easily cultivated on similar sites.  It has grown in our garden here for many years.  Federally listed endangered species CANNOT BE SOLD IN INTERSTATE COMMERCE
