Lespedeza

This shrub or perennial is usually listed as a cultivar of the perennial Lespedeza thunbergii but Missouri Botanic Garden says it is a dwarf cultivar of the shrub Lespedeza bicolor. In any case it is an attractive plant for the sunny, well-drained site and is tolerant of rather poor soils. It forms a mound of arching stems bearing trifoliate leaves and masses of colorful purple pea-like flowers in summer. It can be cut back in late fall since it flowers on new growth. Native to eastern Asia.
