Calycanthus floridus 'Michael Lindsey'

Sweetshrub 'Michael Lindsey'

Selected, introduced, and named by Allen Bush, Holbrook Farm & Nursery (now defunct), Fletcher, NC.  This dense, rounded, & compact deciduous shrub has reddish brown flowers that may have a fruity fragrance.   This clone is noted for the dark green glossy leaves that turn golden yellow in the fall.  The taxonomy of Calycanthus is confused and this cultivar, likely of southern Appalachian provenance, is probably best referred to Calycanthus laevigatus, aka C. fertilis and C. floridus var. glaucus, a plant with smooth undersurface of the leaves and slight if any flower fragrance.
