Odontonema callistachyum

Purple Firespike

Similar to Odontonema stricta, the Cardinal Spear, but leaves perhaps somewhat larger and more fleshy and the large colorful spikes of flowers are purple rather than red. Obtained from JoAnn Breland at Hampton Park in Charleston, SC and showing promise for the sub-tropical garden. Will probably prove root hardy in zone 8 if base mounded with sand, and mulched in late fall. In the more tropical regions this Mexico/Central America native can reach 15 feet. Robert Lee Riffle in his book "The Tropical Look" says: This species should be more regularly planted in warm regions than it is."
