Pomegranate 'Eight Ball'

Pomegranate is a deciduous Middle-eastern shrub with small narrow leaves, orange flowers, and large orange-red edible fruits for which it has been cultivated since ancient times. Some ornamental varieties have showy double flowers and rarely set fruit.  This variety has orange crepe flowers, and round fruit several inches in diameter but this unusual clone is an ornamental curiosity in that the fruits are almost black instead of the normal red.  It is apparently a seedling selection made by our friend and certifiable plant nut the renouned Tony Avent of Plant Delights Nursery in North Carolina.
