Helleborus orientalis
Lenten Rose
The Lenten Rose is not a rose but it does flower around Lent. It is an evergreen herbaceous perennial with attrative palmate leaves with leathery toothed leaflets. The attractive flowers are a couple inces across and are white or purple tinged or streaked. It is an attractive garden perennial easily grown in shady or semi-shady beds or woodland borders with well-drained but moist acid soil. Other species of Hellebore are available but this one is perhaps the easiest to grow in southern gardens. There are various named varieties and color forms available from other growers.
