Kalmia latifolia x hirsuta

Hybrid Laurel
This seemingly unlikely hybrid between the common Mountainlaurel (Kalmia latifolia) and the diminutive, less well-known, and very different Sandhill Laurel (Kalmia hirsuta) of the Deep South was probably first made by the late great Alabama nurseryman Tom Dodd, Jr. It was further investigated by Connecticutt Kalmia expert Dr. Richard Jaynes. It is intermediate between the parents in size and hardiness but bears the typical pink Kalmia flower clusters. An interesting and attractive plant for the garden with well-drained acid soil, semi-shade, and dependable moisture.
