Juniperus virginiana 'Lo Gro'

Eastern Redcedar, Spreading

This unusual form of our common native Redcedar is somewhat of a mystery plant.  Redcedar is normally a medium to large tree of various growth forms including such narrow upright ones as our 'Lawrenceville' and our pendulous 'Hancock' variety.  This plant has been in our garden for perhaps 30 years and is a low growing spreading shrub rather than a tree.  The plant has suffered from neglect and we think we originally got it from our friend and famous plantsman Don Shadow of Shadow Nursery in Tennessee.  We do not find any references to an Eastern Redcedar with this growth habit.   Try it in a sunny location with well-drained soil and let us know what it does.
