Brazilian Plume Flower

Justicia carnea (Jacobinia carnea)is a South American native that is a shrub or sub-shrub in tropical areas but perennial here in zone 8.  It is an upright bushy plant to 5' with glossy leaves and showy pink tubular flowers in dense terminal clusters from summer into fall. Good moist soil in part shade is best. Will freeze to the ground in winter but in most of the Deep South it will re-grow from base if given winter covering of coarse sand and mulch.  This more colorful selecton with leaves purple beneath is the variety 'Radiant'
