Osmanthus americanus

Wild Olive

Osmanthus americanus is an evergreen shrub or tree with smooth margined elliptical leaves and small white flowers in spring. It is native to the southeastern U.S., primarily in coastal plain woodlands. 'Devilwood', so named for it's difficult to work wood, has proven a hardy and useful evergreen considerably northward of it's native range and it is now being grown by other nurseries and used in landscapes. Plant in sun or semi-shade and provide extra water during prolonged dry periods.
