Runner Oak is a low-growing deciduous oak with stiff willow-like leaves. It is a component of the fire maintained southern pine forests of the Coastal Plain of the southern U.S. where it forms large colonies which produce abundant acorns when only a few feet tall. In areas protected from fire it can become a little tree. It is a good wildife food plant and an interesting dwarf oak. Although seldom seen in cultivation it is attractive in the bed or border where allowed to spread or as a specimen plant trained up as a small tree.
