Magnolia virginiana var. australis

Southern Sweetbay

Large, fully evergreen tree.   Magnolia virginiana ranges from Massachusetts southward to Florida and westward to east Texas.   Several variants have been named and described but two distinct forms are the more shrubby northern deciduous form variety virginiana, and the Deep South evergreen form, variety australis, which becomes a large tree.  Both have very fragrant white flowers, will grow in moist soil, and make good ornamental trees.  This is the southern form.
