Aristida beyrichiana

Wiregrass, Southern
This is a fine textured bunch grass with dense wiry foliage and tall, narrow flowering spikes. It is historically the dominant groundcover in frequently burned longleaf pine forests in the southern U.S. It is now becoming rare because of the loss and conversion of this ecosystem. It makes an attractive large bunch grass for sandy, sunny locations. Cut foliage back hard or burn off in late spring to induce graceful flower and seed spikes. Native to southeastern U.S.
