Machilus
Machilus is a handsome broadleaf evergreen tree from eastern Asia. It is in the Laurel family and related to Avocado. It has large glossy leaves but the flowers are greenish yellow, small, and not conspicuous. They are followed by peanut-size small black fruits. We offer seedlings from a tree of Korean origin which is in George Mitchell's garden here in Aiken, South Carolina where it has proven completely hardy. This tree should be planted in well-drained loamy soil in full sun and where it has room to develop into a symetrical specimen.
