Ostrya virginiana

Hop Hornbeam or Ironwood

Small to medium deciduous tree with small, elm-like leaves and unusual fruits that look like Hops. Bark is gray-brown and peels in fine strips. A very good small shade tree that is adapted to well-drained soils in sun or semishade. Odenwald and Turner in their book Identification Selection and Use of Southern Plants for Landscape Design say: "Not readily available in the trade but worthy of much more use." Native to eastern North America.
