It has relatively large kite-shaped deciduous leaves that are "eared" at the base, sizeable creamy white flowers, and typical magnolia "cones" with red seeds. It is surprisingly rare in cultivation and seldom available from nurseries. It is native to mountain forests wih rich moist well-drained soil and can be grown well north of it's native range where site conditions are favorable.
