Evergreen Witchhazel

This Chinese evergreen shrub in the Witchazel family can become almost tree-like. It has small dark green leaves and abundant white fragrant flowers in early spring. The flowers have little filamentous narrow petals giving a fringe like effect and a common name of Chinese Fringetree which is really more properly applied to another plant, Chimonanthus retusus.  Many purple leaf and pink flowered forms of this species have become very popular in recent years but this is the standard white flowered form occasionally seen in southern gardens where it been grown for many years. Plant in sun or semi-shade with soil that is well-drained but not droughty.
