Osteomeles schweriniae

Chinese Emperor Plum

Osteomeles schweriniae is native to China where it can be found in Yunnan and Western Sichuan.  It is a dense evergreen shrub with very small dark green leaves and white flowers that resemble those of hawthorn.  It produces small, white, round berries that are technically pomes. The fruits are said to be sweet and edible and can be eaten raw or used to make jellies and jams.  It is grown in gardens as an oranmental plant but is little known in the U.S.   It can also be used for bonsai.  Plant this shrub in well drained moist soil with sun or part shade.
