Convallaria majalis

Lily of the Valley

This little perennial native to most of the Northern Hemisphere has wide lily-like leaves and very fragrant white flowers in spring.  It is a long time favorite flowering groundcover in the North where it spreads freely.  It is not usually satisfactory in the Deep South.  Dr Armitage in his book Herbaceous Perennial Plants says:  "The plants are about 12" tall and thrive in Zones 2-5, do well in zones 6 and 7, and labor in zone 8.   Grow in semi-shade and consistently moist conditions."
