Smooth Sumac

Smooth Sumac is a colony-forming large tree form deciduous shrub that is good for mass planting in sunny sites with dry soil.   It could be grown as a single tree-like specimen if root suckers are controlled.  The long pinnate leaves turn scarlet in fall and the persistant panicles of red fruit add a burst of color. Panicles of green-yellow flowers appear in June and July.  The berries of this sumac which is widespread native in the eastern U.S. can be steeped in water to produce a reddish lemonaid-like drink.
