Chickasaw Plum

Chickasaw Plum is a thicket forming deciduous shrub or small tree with very early, showy white flowers and edible yellow or red fruit. This species is widespread in the southeastern U.S. but is suspected of having been introduced from farther west by the Native Americans ages ago. The plant is adapted to any well-drained acid soil in full sun. The fruit is tasty and makes good jelly. These plants are seedlings from a later flowering and fruiting clone here in Aiken County, South Carolina.
