Persea palustris

Redbay, Swamp

Evergreen tree with aromatic leaves. Flowers not conspicuous but tree produces many purple berries on long pedicels.  The similar Persea borbonia has fruit on very short pedicels and the leaves have lanate rather than stellate pubescence beneath. Also it grows on drier sites. Redbay leaves are sometimes used as a substitute for Bayleaf (Laurus nobilis) in cooking. It is an attractive landscape tree but native populations on the southeastern coast are being devastated by a fungus disease transmitted by and introduced ambrosia bettle. Fortunately this has so far been of limited occurence in our area. Native to southeastern U.S.
