Castanea pumila

Chinquapin, Alleghany

Deciduous large shrub occasionally tree-like. Oval serrated leaves and edible and very tasty nuts the size of a hazelnut enclosed in a spiny burr as with the related chestnut. Somewhat resistant to chestnut blight or better able to overcome it because of multi-stem habit. Plant on well-drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Native to Eastern U.S. but scattered and uncommon.
