Yaupon Holly 'Virginia Dare'

Yaupon Holly is a common evergreen shrub or small tree with small leaves and red berries on female plants. It is found from southeastern Virgina to Texas. It is a popular and adaptable ornamental and there are a number of named varieties including dwarf types. Yaupon provided the caffenated "black drink" of the coastal Indians and a coffee or tea subsititute for some inhabitants of the Virginia and Carolina coastal strip. This is an orange fruited Yaupon selected in Dare County, NC by B. Bauers, Sr. and named for Virginia Dare, first English child born in North America. Yaupon is salt tolerant and withstands shearing well. Plant a male Yaupon nearby to insure fruit set.
