Holly 'Hoskins Shadow'

Yaupon Holly is a common evergreen shrub or small tree with small leaves and red berries on female plants. It is found from southeastern Virgina to Texas. It is a popular and adaptable ornamental and there are a number of named varieties including dwarf types. Yaupon provided the caffenated "black drink" of the coastal Indians and a coffee or tea subsititute for some inhabitants of the Virginia and Carolina coastal strip. 'Hoskins Shadow' or 'Shadow's Hardy' was selected for large dark green foliage and hardiness by H. Shadow at Howell Nursery in Winchester, TN. It has supposedly withstood minus 10 degrees F., a temperature that Yaupon would not be expected to survive. It is a dense evergreen shrub or small tree with abundant beautiful scarlet fruit which generally holds fall through spring. It is salt tolerant and easily pruned or sheared. A male Yaupon should be planted nearby to insure berry set.
