Ilex latifolia 'Alva'

Holly, 'Alva' Lusterleaf

Lusterleaf Holly is a striking evergreen tree of pyramidal habit.  It has large glossy magnolia-like leaves with serrated edges.  Clusters of small red berries are produced on female plants.  Dr. Dirr (Manual of Woody Landscape Plants) says:  "Although not common in the South, it certainly ranks among the best of the broadleaf evergreens."  Native to China and Japan, it is best planted in sandy, well-drained acidic loam with full sun or semi-shade.  This clone selected by Ted Stephens of Nurseries Caroliniana and named for his brother is an attractive female clone.
