Illicium parviflorum 'Florence'

Ocala Anisetree 'Florence' (variegated)

Native to scattered localities in Central Florida, the Ocala Anise is rare in the wild but widely cultivated in the South. It has highly aromatic olive-green foliage that smells like root beer when crushed and small yellow bell-like flowers in summer that are not showy. It has often mistakenly been sold as Japanese Anise (I. anisatum). A great plant for screening or background in moist soil in shade or semi-shade but tolerant of full sun if well mulched and watered. This selection introduced by Woodlanders is highly variegated with yellow throughout the leaves. We propagated this from one we found at Superior Trees in Lee, Forida and named for one of our favorite people, Mrs. Charles Webb, whose family owns Superior Trees.
