Loblolly Bay

Gordonia lasianthus is a handsome evergreen tree native to moist acid soils in the coastal plain of the southern U.S. It is in the tea family and related to Camellia and Franklinia. Trees in the wild reach large size. The summer flowers are showy, white and several inches across In cultivation Gordonia is not always easy to grow. It is best on sandy seepage slopes or in very sandy, well-drained soil with ample water.
