Ilex vomitoria 'Dewerth (male)'
Yaupon Holly 'Dewerth'
Yaupon Holly is a common evergreen shrub or small tree with small leaves and red berries on female plants. It is found from southeastern Virgina to Texas. It is a popular and adaptable ornamental and there are a number of named varieties including dwarf types. Yaupon provided the caffenated "black drink" of the coastal Indians and a coffee or tea subsititute for some inhabitants of the Virginia and Carolina coastal strip. This is a choice clone with small, narrow leaves. It is a dense, upright male selection of yaupon which came to us from a Mississippi Experiment Station via Jim Berry of Flowerwood Nursery in Alabama. Propagated and named by Tom Dodd, Jr. from a plant in 'Doc' Dewerth's garden in College Station Texas.
